Planning for a B&B Tree
If you are wanting to get a B&B tree here are some things to keep in mind while planning out your project.
Double-check your access, B&B trees range in weight from 300 to 850 pounds with most of the weight in the root ball. The root ball width range from 28 inches to 72 inches. The top and trunk don’t fold well and can be long. So measure your gates and walk along the path to visualize how it will fit. Can you drive a pickup to where you are going to plant it? You are welcome to bring out photos, gate width, and path width and we can show you what would fit. We prioritize safety first for our team and think you should approach safely well. Also, look for slopes and obstacles that could impede getting the tree to where the tree will be planted. Finally on your walk don’t forget to look up for overhead obstacles like powerlines, branches, or roof eaves. Remember the least amount of stress on the tree and human bodies is driving very close to the planting site, and having equipment with hydraulics to put the tree into the hole.
If you are planting it yourself or having it delivered, we strongly recommend calling 811 (2 to 3 days in advance) it can be dangerous to hit a utility line and expensive to pay for the repair, the hole size ranges between 3 feet diameter by 15 to 18 inches deep & 7 feet diameter by 2 feet deep depending on the size and variety of tree. We can provide you with a white flag to mark where the tree goes when you call 811.
B&B Trees should be planted, staked & watered the same day they are lifted from their current place in our field to reduce stress on the trees. So allow time for planting or digging the hole ahead of time when doing it yourself as well as lining up help or equipment to get the tree where it belongs.
If we are delivering or planting equipment access is required. Equipment Access means at least 40 inches or more depending on the size of the tree without dangerous hazards like steep slopes where you need to stabilize yourself as walk up or down them or overhead obstacles that can either damage the tree going in or the equipment.
Safety should always be a #1 concern with heavy objects.
We let you know your tree’s hole size, how much and the kind of soil amendment is best for your soil conditions & variety of trees, and the best way to stake it. In fact, it’s printed on your receipt or work order.
