Planning for a Potted Tree
If you are wanting to get a potted tree here are some things to keep in mind while planning out your project.
Double check your access, Potted trees range in weight from 60 to 300 pounds with most of the weight in the root ball. The root ball width range from 12 inches to 48 inches. The top and trunk don’t fold well and can be long. So measure you gates and walk along the path to visualize how it will fit. You are welcome to bring out photos, gate width and path width and we can show you what would fit. We prioritize safety first for our team and think you should approach safely well. Also look for slopes and obstacles that could impede getting the tree to the where the tree will be planted. Finally on your walk don’t forget to look up for overhead obstacles like power lines, branches or roof eaves. Remember the least amount of stress on the tree and human bodies is driving very close to planting site, having equipment with hydraulics to put the tree into the hole.
If you are planting it yourself, we strongly recommend calling 811 (2 to 3 days in advance) it can be dangerous to hit a utility line and expensive to pay for the repair, the hole size ranges between 2 feet diameter by 15 inches deep & 6 feet diameter by 2 feet deep depending on the size and variety of potted tree. We can provide you with a white flag to mark where the tree goes when you call 811.
Potted Trees taller than 6 foot should be staked. Generally it is best to have the trees planted and watered in within a few days they are brought home to reduce stress on the trees and it easier to care for a planted tree than a tree sitting on top of the ground.
If we are planting equipment access is required for tree larger than a 15 gal pot. Equipment Access means at least 40 inches or more depending on the size of the tree without dangerous hazards like steep slopes where you need to stabilize yourself as walk up or down them or overhead obstacles that can either damage the tree going in or the equipment.
Safety should always be a #1 concern with heavy objects.
We let you know your tree’s hole size, how much and the kind of soil amendment is best for your soil conditions & variety of trees, and the best way to stake it. In fact, it’s printed on your receipt or work order.
