Watering with a Hose on a Trickle
This is where you simply lay a hose out near the tree and turn on the water to a trickle or low pressure to water the tree. We don’t recommend this practice for watering. Water will flow to or pool where the grade is lowest. This may not be where your tree is, or it may not be. It’s wherever the grade is lowest. It also typically exceeds the amount of water at a given time your soil is willing to absorb at a given time. A way of thinking about this is to imagine that trickle like a tiny river, it weaves and darts always going for the path of least resistance and staying together cutting into the land over time. When we water, we need to do it more like rain where it’s tiny droplets that can be absorbed into the soil at a slower rate compared to a tiny river. Your plants will thank you if you simply put a sprinkler on the end of the hose and direct the water where it needs to go.
