Plants of the Weeks for May 28th 2019
This last weekend the roses just exploded with color and will continue their show into October/November depending on cold. Roses prefer at least 6 hours of sunlight. Good airflow and early in the day watering keep them fungus free with our dry hot climate.
Perfect Moment is a long stemmed rose that is great for cutting. It grows to about 5 foot tall and 3 foot wide. It presents these yellow with red edged blooms on long stems. Though not a newcomer to rose world (introduced in 1991), it is a perennial favorite. It has strong stems that are great for cutting but also it works well as a backdrop to shorter perennials. Deadhead or prune the spent blooms to encourage more flowers. Perfect Moment is not the most cold hardy, so mulch it in the winter to keep it happy.
Purple Splash Climbing Roses is a strong performer with purple and white striped blooms. You can train it to climb up a trellis or allow it to grow as a large shrub. It grows to about 8 to 10 feet tall and wide. When used as a large shrub it works great to to provide a colorful barrier to distract you from whatever you want blocked. To encourage more blooms give it a light shearing after it has a lot of spent blooms. Purple Splash is a juggernaut for cold hardiness, I have yet to see a winter damage it too much and I have two in the yard since 2015.
