Perennial Grass are grasses that come back year after year with winter protection if they are rated Zone 6 or lower (Click here to learn about Hardiness Zones). Perennial grasses include the following families: Miscanthus, Fescue, Oat Grass, Plume Grass, Switch Grass, Northern Sea Oats, Bamboo, Feather Reed Grass, Fountain Grasses, Frost Grass, Little Bluestems, Mondo Grass, and some Sedges
Tender Grasses are grasses that will handle our mild winter or with protection may handle the ones that are normal for the Tri-City areas. Generally, these grasses freeze out without protection and are rated Zone 7. Large Pampas Grasses, Sedges, and Mexican Feather Grass are tender grasses.
Annual Grasses are grasses that only last a growing season in the Tri-City area. These grasses would be perennial in warmer climates, but cannot handle our cold winter and will freeze out. They are rated Zone 8 or higher. Several popular grasses that we carry as annuals are Purple Fountain Grass, Fiber Optic Grass, and Millet.
